The War of the Worlds, by H. G. Wells Audiobook, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In Surrey, England, an astronomer looks into space and sees something launch from the planet Mars. After a couple of days, more of these things seem to launch from the red planet. A large Metal cylinder lands on the Horsell Common and a huge group of people run over to see the strange object from space. Scientists and military come to investigate the cylinder, and they hear a strange knocking coming from within it. Slowly the lid of the cylinder starts to unscrew, and after a couple of hours, it falls to the floor. Tentacles emerge from within, and a strange black blob crawls out and falls to the ground around it. The onlookers get closer and closer to see what the alien looks like, but as lasers fire into the air, incinerating many of the people around the cylinder, the people of England start to fight for their survival.
